Tooth whitening can be a highly effective way of lightening the natural colour of your teeth without removing any of the tooth surface.
There are a number of reasons why you might get your teeth whitened. Everyone is different; and just as our hair and skin colour vary, so do our teeth. Very few people have brilliant-white teeth, and our teeth can also become more discoloured as we get older.
First you will need two visits to the dental centre for impressions of your teeth and subsequent fitting of specially made trays that fit your mouth like gum-shields.
The course of whitening is then typically conducted over a further three week period. During this time the trays are worn overnight with the active ingredient in them. The ‘active ingredient’ is carbamide peroxide. As the active ingredient is broken down, oxygen gets into the enamel on the teeth and the tooth colour is made lighter.
The effects of whitening can last up to three years.
Using a whitening toothpaste may help the effect last once your teeth have been professionally whitened.’
